Samsung, as one of the pioneers of foldable phones, is likely to soon introduce the next evolution of this concept. While so far we have only seen a simple fold on the Z Flip and Z Fold models from the South Korean giant’s factories, animation files have appeared in the code of the new One UI 8 overlay, revealing an upcoming phone with a double fold – the so-called tri-fold. It could bear the commercial name Galaxy G Fold, and its unveiling is speculated to happen as early as next week at the Samsung Unpacked event in New York.

Animace, které objevil server Android Authority, zobrazují zařízení se třemi zadními panely a dvěma vnitřními ohyby. Nejzajímavějším zjištěním je, že oba panty mají různou velikost a ohýbají se dovnitř (připomínajíc tvar písmene „G”), což je odlišný přístup než u konkurenčního Huawei Mate XT, který kombinuje vnější a vnitřní ohyb do tvaru „S”.

Three panels, but only two displays

From the animations, it is clear that Samsung has chosen an interesting panel layout. The left panel contains a triple camera in a similar arrangement to what we know from the Galaxy Z Fold series. The middle panel houses the outer display with a punch-hole for the selfie camera, while the right panel is apparently without a display and serves only as a structural element.

When the device is fully unfolded, the outer display is in the middle. The animation also suggests that the phone will need to be unfolded from right to left and shows a warning that folding the right side with the cameras inwards could damage the display. This confirms the assumption that the hinges are of different sizes to allow the phone to be folded „sandwich-style” without damaging the flexible display.

Multifold 7 or Galaxy G Fold?

In the One UI 8 code, the device is referred to as „Multifold 7”, which is likely an internal codename. Previous leaks indicated that the phone carries the internal designation Q7M, while the commercial name could be Galaxy G Fold.

According to earlier leaks, the main flexible display should measure 9.96 inches and the outer display 6.54 inches. The device is expected to weigh approximately 300 grams, which is noticeably more than current foldable phones. It is also likely that Samsung will initially limit availability only to South Korea and China.

Will just another fold be enough?

Samsung is trying to innovate in a segment it helped create, but the question remains whether adding another fold is the right path. Current foldable phones still struggle with high price, weight, and fragility. Adding another fold and increasing the unfolded area might be technically interesting, but the practical use for everyday users remains debatable.

Furthermore, it is important to realize that a phone weighing around 300 grams is no longer comfortable for everyday use. From the information available so far, it is also unclear whether Samsung plans S Pen support, which would make sense on such a large display, or how it has addressed the issue of battery life.

We will likely get answers to these questions as early as next week at Samsung Unpacked, if Samsung indeed unveils this unique device, or at least teases it. The actual market launch will then likely happen with some delay, as is customary for innovative devices.

What do you think about the upcoming Galaxy G Fold?
