Google is introducing a new feature that will help users more easily keep important device services up to date. A new section called „System Services” has been added to Android settings, providing an overview of all Google services running in the background on your phone or tablet. These are crucial for the system to function correctly, even though you don’t typically interact with them.

What will you find in the new System Services section?

The new page in Android settings offers a clear list of all Google system services that help your device function reliably and securely. The list is divided into three categories: Available updates, Not installed, and Up to date. For example, you will find:

Adaptive Connectivity Services – for managing different connection types
Android System Intelligence – provides features like Live Caption and Smart Reply
Android System Key Verifier – coming to Google Messages app
Multi-device services – allows streaming apps to Chromebooks
Device Connection Service – syncs notifications between tablet and phone
Google Play services – Fast Pair, Quick Share, and more
Google Play services for AR – augmented reality support

Most of these services typically update automatically in the background, but until now, you had to visit their page in the Play Store if you wanted to immediately install the latest version. The new section significantly simplifies and centralizes this process.

Why is the new feature important?

Modern Android devices are not powered solely by the basic operating system. Google runs a layer of additional services on top of it, ensuring the security, reliability, and functionality of many advanced features. These services are updated monthly, independently of regular firmware updates.

If you have automatic app updates turned off in the Play Store, you might miss some of these critical updates. The new „System Services” panel addresses this issue and ensures that your device will always use the latest versions of these important components.

In connection with this feature, Google warns that disabling system services „may affect your device’s performance.” In other words, while it is possible to uninstall updates or disable services, it is definitely not a recommended procedure.

When can we expect the new feature?

The new „System Services” page will be available for devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and later. The feature is currently being rolled out gradually, with users participating in the Google System Services beta program being the first to get access. If you registered for the Google Play services beta program in September (via the Play Store), you will get priority access to all system service updates as they become available.

Once the feature is available, you will find it in the Settings app > tap your profile (top tab in Android 16) > All Services tab > Privacy & security > System services. If you don’t see it immediately, you can try going to Settings > Privacy & security > System & updates and installing the latest Google Play system update. After downloading the update, you will be prompted to restart your phone, which should add the System Services option as a new choice.

Do you already have this new section available?
